Goumpki (Gotabki)

Grammy's original recipe with a little help from a Polish cookbook. I remember eating this as a kid in Hudson, on the farm, and all the way growing up. Marlene (Mom) added Rotel Tomatoes & green chilies later -- (yum)

Ingredients

Stuffing Ingredients
1 head Cabbage (4 lbs)
2 lb Hamburger
2 C Cooked Rice (cook in salted water)
2 Egg (beaten)
1 Onion (Chopped)
2 t salt
1 t pepper
Soup Ingredients
2 (10oz cans)

Campbell's Condenced Tomato Soup
Two 10 ounce cans of soup with 2 cans of water added

Water as directed on soup can
4 Carrots (or so)
2 bay leaves
1 onion (quartered or sliced)
1 can Rotel Tomatoes
1 can Green chilies (optional)

Preparation

  1. Cut core out of cabbage and put cabbage upside down in covered pan with about 1 to 2" of water and 1 t salt
  2. Steam cabbage for 15 minutes or until leaves are soft enough to roll hamburger up in it.
  3. Cook rice separately
  4. In large soup pan mix soup ingredients
  5. In a separate pan mix hamburger, rice, egg, onion, salt & pepper.
  6. Use hamburger mixture as filling for each cabbage leaf.  Roll up and place in soup mixture.
  7. Then cook for another hour or 1.5 hours on low or until the hamburger is cooked
